OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) is a goal-setting framework popularized by Google and Intel. An Objective is a qualitative, inspirational goal (what you want to achieve). Key Results are 3-4 quantitative metrics that measure progress toward the objective (how you know you achieved it). OKRs align teams, create transparency, and drive focus on what matters most.

SMART goals focus on individual, specific goals with one outcome. OKRs are a system that connects aspirational objectives to multiple measurable key results. OKRs are designed for organizational alignment, where company OKRs cascade to team OKRs, then to individual OKRs. SMART goals are great for personal productivity; OKRs excel at team and company-wide alignment.

OKRs are typically graded on a 0.0 to 1.0 scale. A score of 0.7-1.0 (green) means you achieved or exceeded the target. A score of 0.3-0.7 (yellow) means partial progress. A score of 0.0-0.3 (red) means little to no progress. The sweet spot is 0.6-0.7, meaning you set ambitious goals. Consistently scoring 1.0 means your goals are not ambitious enough.

Best practice is 3-5 objectives per team per quarter, with 3-4 key results per objective. Fewer OKRs mean more focus. If you have too many, you are spreading your team too thin. Start with 3 objectives if you are new to OKRs. Company-level OKRs should be even fewer, typically 3 maximum, to maintain strategic focus.
